A journalist was harassed by thugs on Wednesday while trying to cover the #EndBadGovernance protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was gathered that a group of thugs gathered opposite the Federal Secretariat in Port Harcourt, intimidating and chasing away both journalists and protesters.
According to Channels TV, two protesters were beaten while police officers stood by and did nothing.
One journalist was surrounded and threatened by the thugs, who said they were there to ensure no protest would take place today.
The Federal Secretariat on the Port Harcourt/Aba express road has been a gathering point for protesters during the past seven days of the hunger and End Bad Governance protest.
The lack of action by over 20 police officers who witnessed the events but did nothing raises concerns about security and the protection of the right to protest in Rivers State.
When contacted, Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu expressed concern over the incident and promised a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
It’s worth noting that the Commissioner had visited the protest sites several times in recent days, ensuring his officers remained professional and maintained peace and order among the protesters.
Disu even offered light refreshments to the peaceful protesters as a gesture of appreciation for their peaceful and law-abiding behavior.
Wednesday marked the seventh day of the nationwide protest, which has turned violent in some Northern states.
KanyoDaily recalls that yesterday, the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters stormed the house of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike in Port Harcourt.
