In June, the Abia State government announced plans to settle the N16.5 billion in salary arrears owed to staff of state-owned higher institutions by the previous administration, in installments.
The state’s Finance Commissioner, Mike Akpara, assured the public that the government would also clear salary arrears for civil servants in stages.
He noted that the current administration inherited the ₦16.5 billion debt and is committed to paying it off without disrupting progress in other areas.
On Friday, September 13, the first group of staff received their payments, and videos shared online captured them kneeling in gratitude and praying for the governor.
