Randy Waldrum Resigns As Super Falcons Coach

Nigeria’s Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum has resigned from his role as head manager, effective immediately.

The 67-year-old American stated in his resignation letter, dated September 12, 2024, that he made the decision due to his wife’s deteriorating health.

It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that.

“After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons.

“This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad,” Randy Waldrum wrote in his letter.

Waldrum’s tenure included leading the Super Falcons to the Round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and qualifying the team for the Paris 2024 Olympics—their first Olympic appearance in 12 years.

However, his time with the team was often marred by a tense relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), as he publicly criticized them for their lack of professionalism.

Waldrum will be remembered for guiding Nigeria through a tough World Cup group, which included hosts Australia, whom they defeated 3-2, and European champions England, who they held to a goalless draw in the Round of 16.

Despite a disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the Falcons exited in the group stage without a win, Waldrum initially expressed a desire to continue in his role.

The coach played a crucial role in bringing the Super Falcons back to the Olympics after a 16-year absence, securing their spot by beating South Africa in the final round of qualifiers.

Although the Paris 2024 Olympics was expected to be his last assignment with the team, the NFF has yet to respond to his resignation at the time of this report.

KanyiDaily recalls that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) recently revealed why German coach, Bruno Labbadia, will not become the new head manager of the Super Eagles.
