Abia Reps, Alex Ikwechegh Arraigned For Assaulting Abuja Driver, Granted N500,000 Bail

A Kuje Magistrate Court has granted bail to House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, with bail set at N500,000.

The lawmaker, who represents Aba North and South, appeared in court following accusations of assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, near his home in Abuja.

The incident, captured on video and widely shared, showed Ikwechegh allegedly slapping Abuwatseya during a confrontation on October 27 in the Maitama area, sparking public backlash.

Stephen Abuwatseya subsequently filed a complaint on October 28, citing assault and threats to his safety.

During his arraignment on Wednesday, October 30, Alex Ikwechegh pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office, assault, and issuing threats.

After reviewing the case, Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id granted Ikwechegh bail with conditions, requiring two sureties who reside within the court’s jurisdiction and proof of residence via utility bills.

The next court hearing is scheduled for November 8.

This comes barely 24 hours after Alex Ikwechegh issued a public apology after allegedly assaulting the Bolt driver who came to deliver a package to his residence in Abuja.
