During the National Prayer Service on Tuesday, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington made the appeal.
She expressed concern that Trump’s new policies were instilling fear among immigrants and LGBTQ people.
Speaking directly to Trump, who was seated in the church’s front row alongside First Lady Melania Trump, Budde said, “Mr. President, I ask you to have mercy.”
When asked for his reaction to her comments after attending the service at the Washington National Cathedra, Trump initially dismissed the service, saying, “I didn’t think it was a good service.”
However, Trump released a statement on Truth Social platform, calling the bishop a “hater” and demanding an apology.
He wrote, “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater.
“She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.
“Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”
This comes after Donald Trump, now serving his second term as president, issued new policies on Monday to suspend the entry of asylum seekers and expel undocumented migrants.
Additionally, he declared that only two genders—male and female—would be recognized in the US, excluding transgender identities.
KanyiDaily recalls that President Donald Trump also signed an executive order to end birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the US Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court for over 125 years.
