Edwin Clark’s family confirmed his death in a statement released by Prof. C. C. Clark on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday, 17th February 2025.
“The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family,” the statement read.
Edwin Clark was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, known for his advocacy for the Niger Delta region. He was a lawyer, nationalist, and activist, championing regional development and unity.
He held several key political positions, including serving as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region (1968-1971) and Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in the former Bendel State (1972-1975).
At the national level, he was appointed Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975 and later served as a Senator from 1979 to 1983.
Beyond politics, Clark was instrumental in fostering peace in the Niger Delta, often stepping in to mediate conflicts between communities and political figures.
Recently, he established a committee to resolve the dispute between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his former political ally, Nyesom Wike.
The committee, chaired by former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, was announced at a special Pan Niger Delta Forum General Assembly in Port Harcourt on October 24, 2024.
Edwin Clark’s death follows closely after the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who died at 96 just a few days earlier.
