Setting up a retail business takes a great deal of work. You have to build up an inventory of products to sell, register your company, and promote your business to raise brand awareness among your customer base. But one of the hardest challenges is setting up your own physical and online stores.
Once your retail business is established, your customer base will start increasing. But during the difficult early stages, success can seem a long way off. To keep you motivated towards your end goal, here are some of the key steps involved in setting up your own retail store.
Sort the legal stuff
There’s a lot of paperwork when it comes to starting a retail business. You need to choose a business structure, register your company name, obtain the necessary licenses and permits, and get the right insurance. This can all take time so make sure you think about the legal stuff early in the process. There can be all kinds of frustrating delays that could hold you back.
Create your brand
As well as your products and services, your business needs a brand. This is the impression you give to your customers and the way you make them feel. It is showcased in your logo, your values, your customer service, and your online interactions. Take some time to craft a brand that reflects what you want your business to be.
Source products
You will need a good supply of products in stock before you start selling. Identify your preferred suppliers or manufacturers who can provide good quality items at reasonable prices. You’ll have to negotiate payment terms and order quantities to establish a constant supply to meet your demand. You may be able to get a better deal for bulk orders.
Set up your store
Your physical store is where many of your customers will purchase your product or service. You need to pick a good location that is convenient and accessible for your ideal audience. It should be big enough for your purpose but affordable for your budget. Design your store layout to showcase your offerings and fill it with all the equipment you require from POS machines to display shelving units.
Hire staff
Will you need employees to manage your store and work the counters? Put out some job advertisements for retail staff, and start conducting interviews. Make sure the people you hire are in line with your company values and put them through proper training so that they can sell your product and deal with customer enquiries effectively.
Build a website
Around 87% of consumers shop on the internet, so you need an online store for those unable or unwilling to travel to your physical location. If you have some web design skills you could do this yourself, using a hosting platform like Wix or WordPress. But to ensure maximum web traffic and search engine optimization, it’s a good idea to hire a professional. Your website should showcase your brand, be easy to navigate, and make checkout as simple as possible.
