Rwanda 0-2 Nigeria: Victor Osimhen Scores Brace In World Cup Qualifier

The Super Eagles of Nigeria revived their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes with a decisive 2-0 victory over Rwanda in their Group C clash.

The win marks their first triumph in the campaign, easing the pressure after a string of disappointing results.

Nigeria came into the match desperate for a win after struggling in previous fixtures. From the kickoff, they dominated possession, pressing high and creating early chances. l

Their persistence paid off in the 11th minute when Victor Osimhen capitalized on a well-delivered free kick from Ademola Lookman, heading the ball home to put Nigeria ahead.

The early goal forced Rwanda to adjust their game plan, as they had initially set up defensively. However, they struggled to create any meaningful chances while Nigeria continued to apply pressure.

Just before halftime, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 45+2 minute. The striker won possession, burst past the Rwandan defense, and finished with a delicate chip over goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.

His clinical performance put Nigeria in a commanding position heading into the second half.

The second half saw Rwanda attempt to mount a comeback, but Nigeria remained composed and disciplined.

The Super Eagles controlled possession and denied the hosts any real goal-scoring opportunities.

Rwanda’s captain, Djihad Bizimana, received an early yellow card for a high challenge on Osimhen, further complicating their efforts.

Despite Nigeria’s continued attacking efforts, they were unable to extend their lead.

Lookman’s set-piece deliveries remained a threat, and Wilfred Ndidi and Osimhen came close to adding a third, but Rwanda’s defense held firm.

With this victory, Nigeria climbs in the Group C standings, keeping their World Cup hopes alive. New head coach Éric Chelle will be pleased with his team’s performance, particularly Osimhen’s heroics.

The Super Eagles will now look to build on this momentum in their upcoming qualifiers.
