Beauty Queen Embarrassed On Stage As She Loses Her Crown Over Divorce Claim [Video]
The winner of the “Mrs Sri Lanka” beauty pageant was left embarrassed on stage after her crown was snatched off her head because she was believed to be divorced.
During the the televised ceremony, the beauty queen Pushpika De Silva won the “Mrs Sri Lanka” title at Colombo theatre on Sunday night and she was briefly crowned by prime minister’s wife Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
However, Mrs World Caroline Jurie, who was at the ceremony, suddenly appeared on stage and announced Ms De Silva stands disqualified and cannot hold the title because she is divorced.
“I am taking my first steps saying that the crown goes to the first runner up,” Ms Jurie said. “There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and are divorced.”
As the live audience watched, Ms Jurie walked towards Mrs Sri Lanka and ripped off her gold crown, hastily removing a set of pins in the process as the situation turned heated on stage.
De Silva later broke her silence a day after the ceremony in a Facebook post where she claimed that she went to hospital to be treated for head injuries caused when the crown was removed,
While addressing the divorce claim. De Silva acknowledged that she is separated from her husband and lives with her child, and dared the jury to provide evidence of the divorce claims.
“As I write this, I responsibly say that I am not a divorced woman. If I am divorced, I challenge them to submit my divorce papers,” she wrote in a statement translated from Sinhala.
“Even though the symbolic crown has been snatched from my head, I would like to inform you that I have already taken the necessary legal action for the injustice and insult that has taken place.”
She further added: “A real queen is not a woman who snatches another woman’s crown, but a woman who secretly sets the other woman’s crown!!”
The Mrs World organisation has also issued a statement, stating they were “deeply disturbed” by the behaviour of Mrs World, Ms Caroline Jurie.
“We are deeply disturbed and sincerely regret the behaviour of our current title holder, Mrs Caroline Jurie, Mrs World 2020, at the crowning.
“Her actions goes against the Mrs Sri Lanka code of conduct and the predetermined regulations she is obliged to follow during her reign.
“We will review the aforementioned incident and we’ll be taking steps, as deemed appropriate, based on the outcome of our assessment,” the statement reads.
The organisers of the Mrs Sri Lanka World pageant said they will return the crown to Ms De Silva on Tuesday and investigations have begun into the matter.
