Commercial Motorcyclists, made up of mostly Hausa riders, clashed with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Lagos State on Monday.
The minor clash which stated between Hausa motorcyclists and NURTW members on Monday morning, degenerated into a tribal clash in Iyana-Iba area of Ojo..
It was learnt that the clash began when Hausa motorcyclists gathered themselves to protest constant harassment by the road union members, after an Hausa motorcyclist was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death.
The protest led to a fight which began with exchange of stones between members of the union and the motorcyclists, soon degenerated into a full blown crisis, as sporadic gunshots were heard at the scene.
Shouts of “e no concern una”, was barked at passerbys, as supposed members of the road union, tried explaining to whoever cared to listen, that the fight was between “us and aboki dem”.
The crisis has compelled the management of LASU to close the gates of the school as students and members of staff have been urged to remain within the premises.
Reacting on his Twitter page, Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the situation has been brought under control.
“The clash was between members of the transport union and the okada riders. Police have brought the situation under control. It’s not a tribal issue please. All Clear now,” Gawat tweeted.
