Brume won bronze after coming third in the Long jump event in the early hours of Tuesday to hand Nigeria her first medal at the 32nd Summer Olympics.
Brume starting out with a huge 6.97m to lead the field in the first couple of attempts. She was later tied by Brittney Reese of USA with the same distance in 2nd, due to a foul but was pegged back to 3rd after Germany’s Malaika Mihambo snuck in with a jump of 7.0m in her last attempt to win gold.
First place (Gold): Malaika Mihambo Flag of Germany – 7.00m
Second place (Silver): Brittney Reese Flag of United States – 6.97m
Third place (Bronze): Ese Brume Flag of Nigeria – 6.97m
Brume is Nigeria’s sole representative in the jumps in Tokyo since the disqualification of Ruth Usoro by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
Apart from Chioma Ajunwa’s gold in 1996 Atlanta, Blessing Okagbare is another Nigerian to have won a medal in the Olympic Long Jump event having won silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
This comes two months after Ese Brume broke Chioma Ajunwa’s African women’s long jump record, which had stood unchallenged for the last 25 years.
