Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed Zamfara state governorship aspirant, Alhaji Sagir Hamidu with other travelers along Kaduna – Abuja expressway.
Hamidu, who had vied for governorship on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was shot dead by the bandits near Abuja while he was returning from the weekend.
Security sources who preferred anonymity told DAILY NIGERIAN that “he (Hamidu) was among those hit by the kidnappers bullets” when they opened fire on travelers near Rijana along the busy expressway around 4 pm on Sunday.
The sources said that many passengers who attempted to run were fired at, while those who cooperated were shepherded into the bush.
A survivor who preferred not to be named said that “the kidnappers took advantage of the damage on the road, which forced on and off-coming motorists to move slowly on a single lane.”
The popular Kaduna-Abuja Highway has become a death trap for travellers, who are constantly attacked; killed and abducted by the armed bandits and suspected herdsmen.
When contacted, the spokesman for the Kaduna State Police Command Mohammed Jalige did not respond to calls and text messages sent to him at the time of filing this report.
KanyiDaily had also reported how Pastor Sylvester Yerinbide was killed on his way to a night vigil at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the Aladja area of the Udu council of Delta State.
