The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari over the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to redesign some Naira notes denominations.
Adeboye Tackles Buhari Over Plan To Redesign Naira
KanyiDailt recalls that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said that the apex bank would redesign Nigeria’s currency from N200 naira denomination to 1,000 naira notes from December 15.
Emefiele said that the action was taken in order to take control of the currency in circulation just as he posited that the bulk of the nation’s currency notes were outside bank vaults and that the CBN would not allow the situation to continue.
He said the planned policy was in line with Sections 19, Subsections a and b of the CBN Act 2007, upon which the apex bank sought and obtained the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign, produce, and circulate new series of banknotes at N200, N500, and N1,000 levels.
Reacting to the development, Pastor Adeboye wondered why the Buhari-led government was planning to redesign the naira notes when people are hungry and looking for money.
The cleric, who spoke during RCCG’s November Holy Ghost Service with the theme, ‘Let It Rain’ on Friday night, lamented that Nigeria’s situation had deteriorated to the point where Naira was no longer worth the paper on which it was printed.
He said, “You know what’s going on in our country. It doesn’t even make sense anymore. Our naira now is not even worth the paper it is printed on.
“And while people are hungry, trying to find enough money to buy bread to eat, our bosses are thinking of making the naira more beautiful, even if it can’t buy bread, at least, it will look beautiful. Oh Lord, have mercy!
“We have problems in the land now. Things seem to be getting funnier and funnier. If you don’t learn to laugh in Nigeria now, you will develop hypertension.”
KanyiDaily recalls that the Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmad had distanced herself from CBN’s plan, warning that the new policy may have grave consequences on the value of Naira to other foreign currencies.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki also said that the CBN’s plan to redesign naira notes is political and a ploy by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to sway voters ahead of the 2023 general elections.
