Senator Iyorchia Ayu has stepped down as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ayu stepped down as chairman of the PDP some minutes ago.
He stepped down a few days after the PDP in his ward in Benue State suspended him.
Earlier on Tuesday, kinsmen from Igyorev Ward in Ipav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, of the former senate president stormed the national secretariat of the PDP where they addressed a press conference.
Ayu’s action came days after a federal judge ordered his temporary exit from office pending resolution to a series of political crises that recently beset the main opposition party.
Kanyi Daily recalls that Iyorchia Ayu fought for months to remain in office against stiff opposition from the PDP G5 governors led by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
Wike and other G5 governors including Samuel Ortom of Benue, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia insisted that Ayu must step aside for a southerner to occupy the seat.
They based their argument that since the party’s presidential ticket had gone to a northerner (Atiku Abubakar), it was unjust the position of the national chairman remained in the north.
Atiku is from Adamawa, North East, while Ayu hails from Benue, North Central.
This is a breaking story. More details shortly…
