The case of fake West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) certificate against a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun federal constituency, Rita Orji has been adjourned to the 28th of June, 2023.
A petitioner (name withheld) had before the 2023 general elections, petitioned the Police Force Headquarters, alleging that Orji has been using a fake WAEC certificate.
Acting on the petition, the force headquarters invited her on multiple occasions for questioning, investigation, and possible prosecution over the allegation.
Instead of honouring the invitation, Rita dragged the police command before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, sitting in the Apo area of Abuja, praying the court to restrain the command from investigating her.
She also argued that the police was infringing on her fundamental human rights.
Justice Bello Kawu of the Federal Capital High Court, has adjourned the case to June 28th for a hearing.
Orji was elected a member of the House of Representatives between 2015 and 2019 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
She lost her 2019 re-election bid to Kolawole Taiwo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Taiwo polled a total of 36,115 votes to defeat Rita Orji, who got 32,557 votes.
