Nigerian musician and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has responded to those calling for his arrest following a controversial comment he made.
In a post stated on his Instagram page, Charly Boy urged Nigerian youths to emulate the actions of French protestors who “rejected the system that let them down.”
KanyiDaily had reported how violent protests erupted in France after a 17-year-old boy was shot dead by a police officer near Paris on Tuesday.
Sharing a video of the protesters vandalizing public property in response to the boy’s killing, Charly Boy said that he expected Nigerian youths to similarly reject a system they believe has failed them.
“This isn’t Syria, Iraq or Afghanistan. This is France where 9% of the population has brought down entire cities!”, he wrote.
“Karma from Africa? Am waiting on the exceptional Nigerian Youths to reject a system that let dem down. Una destiny dey una hand”.
His statement offended some Nigerians, who demanded his arrest for allegedly inciting civil disorder, while others urged the security operatives in the country to “call him to order immediately”.
In response, Charly Boy insulted those calling for his arrest in a tweet, expressing amusement at their reactions and referring to them as foolish monkeys.
He also criticized the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly focusing on arresting people who criticize criminals rather than apprehending the criminals themselves.
The musician stood by his previous remarks, asserting that he encouraged Nigerian youths to take control of their destiny and dismantle what he considers a criminal enterprise.
Charly Boy also described the individuals criticizing him as foolish and attempting to act tough on his social media post.
He wrote, “Na only me just dey Laff as guys just dey Kpara on top my Post, pple come dey even call for my arrest, see monkeys.
“DSS can’t arrest criminals but can arrest people who speak against criminals. You’re a useless Nigerian.
“Because I charged the Youths of Nigeria to take their destiny in their hands and bring down a criminal Enterprise, some Mumu persons come dey form gangster on top my post [sic].
KanyiDaily recalls that Charly Boy recently criticized Kcee and E-Money for praising MC Oluomo who intimidated Igbos in Lagos at the just concluded general elections.
