A police inspector, whose identity remains unknown, has been killed by gunmen while on escort duty at a prominent hotel in the DLine area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the inspector was accompanying a very important personality (VIP) when the attackers, riding in a Toyota Corolla, intercepted them on Friday night.
The gunmen were said to have shot the police officer and absconded with his service AK-47 rifle and beret.
SP Grace Iringe Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident and revealed that a manhunt has been launced to apprehend the culprits who fled the scene.
“On 25/08/2023 at about 2030hrs, information was received that one Inspector ‘m’ attached to Department of Operations, Yenegoa, Bayelsa State was fatally shot in the head while escorting his principal around Landmark Hotel at Oroworukwo Olu Obasanjo Port Harcourt.
“His rifle and beret were carted away. Patrol teams were immediately mobilized to the scene. Effort is ongoing to arrest the fleeing hoodlums and recover the rifle.
The corpse has been deposited at the Military Hospital, Port Harcourt for autopsy,” she said
