A 30-year-old man, Gabriel Olayiwola was on Tuesday, arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly unleashing his German shepherd dog on a police officer, ASP Oyagbola Jelili, at the Ikotun Egbe area of Lagos State.
Olayiwola was arraigned before Magistrate O. Y. Adefope of a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, on three counts of wilful damage of properties and threat to life.
According to reports, the man unleashed the dog on the policeman who was at his residence on March 1, 2023, to arrest him after he damaged his co-tenant’s BMW X5 2013 model car valued at N3m during a disagreement.
At the court, the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji said the offence committed by
Olayiwola contravened and was punishable under Sections 351 (d) (1), 168(d), and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The charge read in part, “That you, Gabriel Olayiwola, on March 1, 2023, at No 18, Odogbolu Street, off Princess Abiola Road, Ikotun Egbe, Lagos in the magisterial district did intentionally lose your German shepherd dog to bite one ASP Oyagbola Jelili when he came to arrest you and, in the process, the said dog bit the officer on his right shoulder which did him grievous harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He was granted bail by the magistrate in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till September 22, 2023, for mention.
In other news, Kanyi Daily reported that a 70-year-old British national, Christine Brown who had fallen victim to internet fraud was on Monday, August 28, 2023, presented with the sum of $26,000 by the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
