The Anambra State Government says it has detained a couple who starved their five-year-old daughter due to witchcraft suspicions.
Mrs Ify Obinabo, the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, confirmed the arrest to journalists on Thursday.
Mrs Blessing Wosu, the victim’s mother, who admitted to the crime, said she was following her pastor’s prophecy that her five-year-old daughter was a witch who did not deserve to live.
“It was our pastor who told us she is a witch and does not deserve to live.” We were told that she is to blame for her father’s economic failure.”
Wowu went on to say that she forced her daughter sleep on a plank since she was always pooing and peeing on her body.
The pair was apprehended at the state’s Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area.

Obinabo stated that she interfered in the situation after receiving reports from Anaocha LGA’s Transition Committee Chairman, Mr Gerald Ozoh, and the state coordinator of Ladies of Good Governance, Mrs Chinwe Uba.
She stated that her first responsibility was to protect the rights of all children in the state and that she would not let the accused go free.
“The girl is receiving treatments at the hospital while her parents would be handed over to the police for further investigation,” she added.
