Nigerian superstar, Davido has confidently declared himself the ‘King of Afrobeats’ while speaking about his influence on the African music landscape.

During an interview with Reena Roy on ABC News, Davido was asked why he is called the “King of Afrobeats”, and he said it as a well-deserved recognition.

He explained that it was the outcome of years of dedication and a journey that commenced in his youth. He proudly asserted that he had garnered respect and acclaim in the Western world.

Speaking on his music style and lifestyle,  Davido explained that his songs are deeply rooted in African culture, while his penchant for enjoying life aligns with Western vibes.

He revealed that during his early years, he drew inspiration from Nigerian music icons like 2face, Psquare, and D’banj, while also enjoying the sounds of American rappers such as 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nelly, and Ludacris.

However, while in college, he made a pivotal decision to return to Nigeria and immerse himself in the burgeoning Afrobeats movement.

Sharing the video on his Instagram page, Davido wrote: “Seeing the way Afrobeats has changed the world and the impact we’ve had in music is beautiful!

“To see how respected and cherished our culture has become makes me so proud. Let’s make sure we protect it and keep building a borderless music world @abcnevws”
