The Recording Academy, which organises the Grammy Awards, claims that no Afrobeats or African artist is “bigger” than Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy.
The Academy made the claim in a statement released on Saturday on its website, congratulating Burna Boy and other nominees for the newly created Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammys.
Burna Boy is “firmly in his imperial era,” according to the Grammys, having collaborated with “global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber” and earning his first UK No. 1 album this year with “the classic hip-hop influenced I Told Them…, featuring appearances from 21 Savage, J. Cole, RZA, and GZA.”

According to the Academy, “there is no bigger star in Afrobeats, or even in Africa itself, than Burna Boy.” He received two consecutive GRAMMY nominations for Best Global Album for his albums Twice as Tall and African Giant, and he has collaborated with global stars such as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.”
Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys’ was nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards, according to reports.
‘City Boys’ will compete for the award alongside Davido and Musa Keys’ ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ and others. Asake and Olamide’s ‘Amapiano,’ as well as Tyla’s ‘Water.’
