The Super Eagles of Nigeria have demonstrated an impressive performance in the latest FIFA men’s ranking released on Thursday.
The Nigerian national team moved up 14 places from the 42nd position to the 28th position globally and securing the 3rd spot in Africa.
This notable improvement also positions the Super Eagles at its highest ranking since May 2013.
The surge is attributed to the Super Eagles’ commendable performance in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where they clinched the silver medal after finishing as the runners-up.
Despite an unbeaten run in the tournament, the Eagles faced a 2-1 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the final.
The outcome propelled Cote d’Ivoire from the 49th to the 39th position in the global ranking. While, Morocco and Senegal maintained their positions as the top African teams.
Argentina retained its position as the world’s number one team, with France and Brazil securing the second and third positions, respectively, in the latest ranking.
The FIFA Men’s World Ranking, established by the football’s global governing body, assesses the performance of men’s national teams in association football.
Teams are ranked based on their success in FIFA-recognized international matches, and points are allocated according to match outcomes.
The next release of the FIFA world ranking is scheduled for April 4, 2024.
