A dispute between commercial motorcyclists, known as Okada riders, and a task force in Asaba, the Delta State, has resulted in the reported deaths of two people.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, prompted motorcyclists to block the Okpanam road axis in the Midwifery area of Asaba to protest the killings.
A viral video circulating on social media platforms captured the protesters obstructing roads while police officers deployed to the scene reportedly opened fire.
Bright Edafe, the police spokesperson in Delta State, confirmed the incident in a post on Twitter, stating that the protest erupted on Monday morning.
Edafe explained that the dispute between the protesters and the task force escalated, leading to the unfortunate deaths of two people.
He said, “There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had an issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons.
“They mobilized in their numbers this morning destroying properties and beating people, hence our men were deployed to control the situation before it turned into something else.”

The incident comes in the wake of another tragedy in the state, where 16 soldiers were killed during a peacekeeping mission in Okuoma community, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State.
