Will Stevens recently hosted Nigerian comedian Bright Okocha, known as Basketmouth, at the U.S. consulate in Lagos.

They engaged in conversations surrounding the consul general’s favourite places, food, and artistes in Nigeria.

When asked about his favorite artist, Stevens named Tems, praising her as “incredible and one of the best.”

He mentioned that even though he has met several top Nigerian artists, Tems is the one he listens to the most.

Stevens revealed that his favorite song by Tems is her rendition of Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry’ from the Black Panther sequel.

He said, “My favourite Afrobeats artist? It got to be Tems. That voice… I got a little bit of a crunch just listening to her. And on the Black Panther, when she sings ‘No Woman, No Cry’ by Bob Marley. She is incredible. She is one of the best.”

The Consul General said aside from Tems, he also listens to other Afrobeats artists such as Asake, Fireboy, Davido and more.

“I have met a bunch of them Fireboy, Asake, Davido. I have not met Burna Boy but they are great guys. Wonderful people. I know Nigerian artistes and I can jam to them a little bit. But Tems is the one that I can just tune in anytime,” he said.

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, won her first Grammy award in February 2023 for ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ on Future’s hit song ‘Wait for U’ featuring Drake.

In March, she received the ‘Breakthrough Award’ at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
