Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu has refused to stand for the newly adopted national anthem, choosing to sit during its recitation at a recent event.
This happened after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, bringing back the old anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
“Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” originally written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, has replaced “Arise, O Compatriots.”
Aisha Yesufu posted a video of her protest on her X page on Friday with the caption #NotMyNationalAnthem.
In the video, the activist could be seen sitting and reading a book while everyone else in the room stands for the old re-introduced anthem.
Sharing a video from an event on Friday, May 31, 2024, the activist wrote “#NotMyNationalAnthem,” making it clear that she rejects the new anthem.
