A two-storey residential building collapsed in Abuja early Saturday morning, leaving many trapped under the rubble.
Residents say the building, located beside Cupid Hotel on Cupid Road (Sultan Dasuki Way) in Kubwa, was formerly a hotel and later a hospital before being converted into a residential apartment.
The news comes barely 24 hours after a secondary school building collapsed in Plateau State, killing 20 people so far and injuring over 200 with many more still trapped.
According to eyewitnesses, the collapse occurred around 7 a.m, with many people trapped inside the building.
An emergency responder told news men that the lack of necessary equipment, such as cranes hindered rescue efforts.
“We arrived at the scene quickly, but we are still waiting for the cranes to arrive,”
“We have managed to rescue a few people, but there are still many others trapped inside.”
One of the survivors, who wished to remain anonymous, described the moment the building collapsed.
“I woke up around 7 a.m. and came out of the house. I started hearing some cracks, and then I ran out. It was terrifying.”
As rescue efforts are ongoing, the number of people trapped inside the collapsed building cannot be ascertained. So far, two people have been rushed to a nearby hospital.
