The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on a 7-day warning strike at all its centers nationwide.
The strike is in response to the ongoing captivity of one of its members, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was abducted over 8 months.
NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced in a statement that the strike would begin on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12:00 a.m.
He explained that the decision was made during an emergency virtual meeting of the National Executive Council held on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
The strike will last for one week and will be complete, meaning there will be no emergency services provided.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Ophthalmology Department at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was kidnapped almost 8 months ago, along with her husband and nephew.
While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
In recent weeks, NARD members held protests at all tertiary hospitals across the country, demanding the immediate release of Dr. Popoola.
KanyiDaily recalls that Aviation Unions had also announced a nationwide strike, to protest the FG’s deduction of 50% from the internally generated revenue of key aviation agencies.
