Big Brother Naija star and two-time Nigerian high jump champion, Mike Edwards has made his debut in professional boxing, winning his first fight against Jake Cornish.
The match, which took place at the Dublin Arena, lasted all rounds and ended with Edwards winning by a unanimous decision from the judges.
Mike Edwards fought in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division, a league founded by KSI, an English social media personality and professional boxer with Nigerian roots.
Announcing his entry into professional boxing, Edwards made his debut on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in the cruiserweight category, signaling a big shift from his track and field background.
He shared his excitement about this new journey, saying, “Breaking News: Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”
Before this, Edwards had a successful career in athletics. He competed for Great Britain before switching to represent Nigeria in 2018.
He achieved a personal best of 2.25m in the high jump, won the Nigerian national championships twice (in 2021 and 2022), and reached the final of the African Athletics Championships twice, narrowly missing out on a gold medal in 2022.
The BBNaija reality star also made it to the finals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
