American star, Taylor Swift has publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for president shortly after the conclusion of Tuesday night’s debate against Donald Trump.
Taylor Swift made the announcement on Instagram, describing herself as “Childless Cat Lady,” a playful response to comments made by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.
In her post, Swift said, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
The singer, who previously supported President Joe Biden in 2020, described Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader”.
She added: “I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
The post, which featured Swift posing with her cat, referenced Vance’s controversial 2021 remarks, where he described prominent Democrats, including Harris, as “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives”.
Swift also expressed her approval of Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, commending his longstanding support for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s reproductive rights.
The singer said she was motivated to publicly share her voting decision after a fake AI-generated image falsely showing her endorsing Trump appeared on his website.
“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” she said.
“It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.”
Trump’s embrace of the false images sparked outrage among Swift’s fans, who accused him of spreading misinformation.
Swift joins other celebrities, such as John Legend, Olivia Rodrigo, George Clooney, and Spike Lee, in endorsing Harris.
Swift’s endorsement followed a heated 90-minute debate where Harris and Trump clashed over topics including abortion rights, the economy, and immigration.
Taylor Swift, who has been vocal in her criticisms of Trump, had also supported Biden and Harris during the 2020 election.
Her Instagram post quickly gained traction, amassing over 4.5 million likes within hours.
Swift, who has 283 million Instagram followers, urged her fans, especially first-time voters, to register and promised to share more voting information.
“I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make,” she said.
