A heated mayoral debate in São Paulo turned violent when candidate and news anchor, Jose Luiz Datena attacked his opponent, Pablo Marçal, with a chair.
The shocking incident which happened on Sunday has disrupted the race for mayor in Brazil’s biggest city.
Marçal suffered a fractured rib and dislocated finger and was rushed to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties.
Pablo Marçal, who had been polling in third place behind the current mayor Ricardo Nunes and left-wing candidate Guilherme Boulos, had stated before the debate that he intended to “rattle” Datena, who was trailing with only 6% support.
Throughout the debate, Marçal repeatedly brought up past sexual harassment allegations against Jose Luiz Datena, even though they had been withdrawn.
This clearly angered Datena, who accused Marçal, a social media influencer, of turning the debate into a publicity stunt.
The argument escalated when Datena lost his temper and struck Marçal with a chair.
After the attack, Marçal likened the incident to assassination attempts on Donald Trump, questioning the growing hate he’s encountered.
Much of Marçal’s rise in popularity has been fueled by his large social media following, with over 13 million followers.
The election in São Paulo is scheduled for early October.
