Using an actress who looks identical to the country’s leader, the short film was produced and released to coincide with the launch of Straight Magazine, a German publication for gay women.
It appears to be a dig at her fierce resistance to gay marriage – Mrs Merkel has repeatedly stated she believes marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
The short film shows a woman who looks similar to the German Chancellor gazing out a window, before a younger woman approaches her from behind. hugs her and gives her a kiss, then Merkel leans back to accept the kiss.
A camera filming through a gap in the door continues to focus on her while a radio report in the background states 62 per cent of Germans are in favour of gay marriage.
The caption accompanying the video, which was released on Twitter, states: ‘Everybody in Europe hates Merkel? Except this woman.’
Just last week Mrs Merkel reaffirmed her stance on the contentious issue during an interview with German social media star Florian Mundt.
She said:
‘For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together. That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships… [I want] equality, but I make a difference at some point.’
‘I am for registered civil partnerships. I am for our not having any discrimination in tax legislation. And wherever we still find discrimination, we will continue to dismantle it.’
