A 34-year old Italian nurse, Daniela Trezzi has taken her own life after contracting the deadly coronavirus because she was scared of spreading the virus to other people, whom she was meant to save.
Trezzi was said to have been suffering “heavy stress” amid fears that she was spreading the deadly virus while treating patients at the San Gerardo Hospital in Lombardy, the worst-affected region of Italy.
She was working on the front line of the coronavirus crisis in the intensive care unit while under quarantine after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
The Hospital’s general manager, Mario Alparone said Trezzi had been at home sick since March 10, 2020, and that “she was not under surveillance.”
The National Federation of Nurses of Italy confirmed her death in a statement last night, and expressed its ‘pain and dismay’.
“We express our pain and consternation over the suicide of our young colleague. Our 450,000 professionals will join together around the relatives and family of Daniela,” the statement reads.
Trezzi’s death which is currently under investigation, is coming just a week after another nurse in Venezia killed herself.
KanyiDaily had reported that Italy is currently the worst hit nation with more than 6,820 deaths and almost 70,000 confirmed patients, and has surpassed China where over 3,200 people have died.
