Nigeria on Saturday, the last day of the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, dropped to third position on the medals table, with Egypt taking the second spot and South Africa first.
The table, released on the COJA website www.cojamaputo2011.org.mz on Sunday, showed that Nigeria had 98 medals comprising 31 gold 28 silver and 39 bronze.
Egypt had a total of 66 medals comprising 32 gold, 14 silver and 22 bronze beating Nigeria to the second place by just one gold medal.
South Africa, which topped the table right from the beginning of the Games on Sept. 3, finished with a total of 156 medals comprising 61 gold, 55 silver and 41 bronze
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Games statistics shows that a total of 808 medals were won, comprising 248 gold, 246 silver and 314 bronze.
Tunisia, Algeria, Kenya and Senegal were placed fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, winning 68, 84, 50 and 33 medals respectively.
Coming from the rear, among the 36 countries on the medals table, are Togo, Sao Tome and Principe, and Liberia with one bronze each.
COJAmedal figures also showed that swimming alone accounted for 74 medals won by South Africa. They comprise 33 gold, 23 silver and 18 bronze.
Nigeria dominated in athletics, picking a total of 42 medals comprising18 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze.
Kenya came a distant second with 26 medals – 10 gold, seven silver and nine bronze. (NAN)
