No fewer than four persons, including a suspected former councillor, were killed yesterday in renewed cult clashes that occurred in different parts of Enugu State. This was just as the abductors of the Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have allegedly demanded N200 million ransom.
Although the police did not confirm the ransom demand, they confirmed that his vehicle was recovered intact at Awka, the Anambra State capital.
Eye witnesses said most of the cult clashes took place in Ogui and Achara Layouts.
It was gathered that two persons were killed in the morning at Adelabu and Peter Okoye streets, Uwani area of Enugu, while one was killed at Onuasata in the afternoon.
According to our source, the fourth person, suspected to be a former councillor in one of the local government areas of the state, was killed in the evening at One Day Road, Awkunanaw.
The source added that the assailants used cars to carry out their operations.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Enugu State Command, Ebere Amaraizu, stated that the police were waiting for reports to enable him confirm the incident.
He, however, said the command was currently investigating a case of murder at Asata involving one Nwaokolo Nnamdi as well as that of Uwani “but we are yet to establish to whether it has cult involvement.”
