The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Senator representing Kaduna Central District at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has commended move by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government to remove the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen.
Yesterday we reported that the FG will on Monday, January 14, 2019, arraigned the CJN before the Justice Danladi Yakubu led- Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in Abuja on charges of failures to declare his assets as required by law and for operating Bank Domiciliary Foreign Currency Accounts.
The charge sighted against Justice Onnoghe has already being filed and served on him last Friday at his official residence in Abuja preparatory for his appearance at the tribunal. (Read the report HERE).
SERAP, reacting on its official Twitter page, described the order against CJN Onnoghen as impressive, but however, demanded that the same order should be placed on senior politicians and governors. SERAP wrote:
“The speed at which CCB has moved to “file charges against the CJN” is impressive but same promptness must be applied to senior politicians at all levels-president, governors, etc.
“We’ll start by suing to compel high-ranking officials to publish their assets declaration details.”
Senator Shehu Sani also reacted to the move on his Twitter page by describing it as a ‘political assault on the sacred temple of justice. He tweeted:
“The move against the CJN onnoghen is a political assault on the sacred temple of justice; it should be resisted and rescinded.
“The government has moved in the crane to the Court in order to remove a Bench from the roof.
“This amount to throwing a bolt on the runway of our democracy and peace.”
