President Muhammadu Buhari has finally broken his silence over the nationwide protest against the continued extrajudicial activities of the notorious police unit Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
KanyiDaily had reported that there is an ongoing #EndSARS protest across the country against the SARS tactical unit of the Nigerian Police Force over brutality, illegal arrest, extortion, extra-judicial killings, among others.
In statement issued on his Twitter page on Friday, October 9, 2020, President Buhari said he met with the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, adding that their determination to reform the Nigerian police should never be in doubt.
“I met again with the IGP tonight. Our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. I am being briefed regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality and unethical conduct, and ensure that the Police are fully accountable to the people.
“The IG already has my firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding these excesses, & ensure erring personnel are brought to justice. I appeal for patience & calm, even as Nigerians freely exercise their right to peacefully make their views known.
“The vast majority of men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are patriotic and committed to protecting the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians, and we will continue to support them to do their job,” he said.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Police PRO, Frank Mba had said some of the #EndSARS protesters are beneficiaries of criminal activities, looking for online validation.
He said that given the investment the Federal Government has put into training the officers and setting up the department, ending SARS is not even an option.
