A Nigerian rapper based in the United Kingdom, Olawale Hassan popularly known as Goldie 1, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a woman inside his car after meeting her in Essex nightclub in Southend.
According to BBC, the 33-year-old rapper who lives Falcon Avenue, Grays, Essex, attacked the victim in Southend while she was out with a friend in 2017 after claiming he was a music producer.
The police said the woman, in her 20s, had turned down his requests for her number and to accompany him to his hotel room, before he promised to get her home safely after her friend left.
However, instead of taking her home as agreed, Hassan parked his car on the seafront and locked its doors when she tried to flee before attacking and raping her. The rapist later took her home where she called the police.
During his trial, he denied the three counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault by penetration. But he was found guilty at Basildon Crown Court and jailed on Tuesday October 6, 2020, for 10 years and two months.
Helen Walsh, senior Crown prosecutor in the rape and serious sexual offences unit for CPS East of England, said:
“We were able to present the case that Olawale was a controlling sexual predator who showed a complete disregard for the victim’s lack of consent.
“He exploited his opportunity to sexually assault the woman before proceeding to rape her multiple times while she drifted in and out of consciousness in his car.
“Consent can be withdrawn at any time and at the discretion of the individuals involved. Just because you consent to dancing does not mean you consent to sex.
“The law is clear, sex without consent is rape and this case shows that where there is sufficient evidence we will not shy away from prosecuting the perpetrators of such heinous crimes.”
Investigating officer Detective Constable Victoria De’ath, of Essex Police, said: “I would like to thank the victim for her courage in reporting this incident.
“When I first met her, she blamed herself for getting in Hassan’s car but has now recognised just how dangerous this man is and that none of this is her fault.’
“She didn’t want him to hurt anyone else and this has been her motivation for three and-a-half years,”
Det Con De’ath added she hoped Tuesday’s sentencing at Basildon Crown Court would bring “comfort to this courageous and inspirational woman, who is now rebuilding her life knowing Hassan is safely behind bars”.
KnayiDaily had also reported how a 30-year-old Nigerian Man, Jamel Nwokoye, was sentenced to four years in jail after attacking a woman with the intent to rape her in the United Kingdom.
