Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said she’s happy to be in the race for the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Okonjo-Iweala stated this in a post shared on her Twitter page on Thursday, October 8, 2020, while appreciating Nigerirans, friends, President Muhammadu Buhari for their prayers and support.

She wrote: “Happy to be in the final round of the WTO DG campaign. Thanks, WTO members for your continued support of my candidacy. I could not have made it without the prayers and support of all Nigerians and friends around the world. Thank you Muhammadu Buhari and all my friends. Aluta continua!”

KanyiDaily had earlier reported that Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea‘s Yoo Myung-hee were selected as the two finalists in the contest to lead the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

If Okonjo Iweala wins the final vote next month, she will become the first African woman to take the role of WTO DG, succeeding the current DG, Mr. Roberto Azevêdo.

With the two women advancing to the final round of the selection process on November 7, 2020, the WTO will likely have the first ever female director general in its 25-year history.
