Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has wished his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, and his wife, Melania, after they tested positive for coronavirus.
KanyiDaily had reported that the US president and the first lady tested positive to COVID-19 after one of the top presidential aides, Hope Hicks, contracted the virus.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, on Friday, President Buhari sympathised with the US first family over their state of health.
He said the incident of COVID-19 in the White House manifests the challenge posed by the pandemic across the world, and the difficulty in containing its spread.
“President Muhammadu Buhari joins all citizens of United States of America in prayers for quick and full recovery of President Donald Trump and his wife, Melanie, who reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
“The President notes, with sympathy, that the incident of COVID-19 in the White House manifests the challenge posed by the pandemic across the world, and difficulty in containing the spread,” Adesina said.
President Buhari wished the American First Family a speedy turnaround in their current health status and urged more compliance among Nigerians to protocols put in place by the government to check further spread of the virus in the country.
The positive tests comes after the US President said he’s been taking anti-malaria drug ‘hydroxychloroquine’ to prevent COVID-19 infection even though it is not yet a proven treatment.
KanyiDaily also recalls that President Trump had come under heavy backlash on social media after referring coronavirus as a “Chinese Virus.”
He accused China of being the originator of the coronavirus, saying in confidence that he had seen evidence linking the virus to a virology lab in China’s ground-zero city of Wuhan.
President Trump had also stopped all US funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) over allegations of the organization siding with China to cover up the spread of coronavirus.
