The chairman of Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Idi Amin, has been caught on camera physically assaulting a mechanic, Segun Oyeniyi, in the state.
In the viral video, a police officer was seen initially preventing Amin from hitting the mechanic, but he broke free and dashed towards the mechanic, who he hit in the face, while also hurling abuses on him in Hausa.
In his defence, Amin who confirmed and admitted being responsible for the assault on the mechanic, said the incident happened about a year ago.
Amin, who was elected under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), claimed that the video release was the handiwork of the chairmen of two council areas whom he had a disagreement with over funds.
He said the two chairmen even attempted to beat him up during a meeting with the state governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, at the government house chambers due to some issues that have to do with funds.
The chairman said he is not perturbed by the blackmail video because the person involved was not the one making the case against him.
“This thing happened one year ago and it happened because the mechanic defrauded me N3.9m over a car. I gave him the paper showing that he collected N3.9m to buy a car for me.
“When I wanted to collect the car he denied ever transacting with me so that was what brought the scuffle but later people intercede and settled us and everything was resolved amicably,” he said.
However, the younger brother of the mechanic, Isaiah Oyeni, said LGA Chairman who was seen wearing face mask in the video, lied because the incident happened about a month ago.
“The chairman, who owes my brother and has refused to pay, brought his car to the workshop to be fixed. My brother insisted he would not work on the car if the chairman did not pay him.
“Because my brother asked him to pay the outstanding, the chairman came to the garage to assault him, claiming he cheated him and still asked him to pay,” Oyeni said.
The brother disclosed that the matter was reported to the police after which the LGA chairman pleaded for settlement.
Isaiah said he was opposed to the idea of settling the issue and wished his brother took the matter to court “so the politician can learn a lesson.”
