BREAKING: Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Appointed As DG Of World Trade Organization

A former Nigerian minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The WTO made the announcement via a tweet on Monday, February 15, 2020, saying Okonjo-Iweala is the first African and first woman to lead the organisation.

It reads: “BREAKING: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.”

Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment is coming after United States President, Joe Biden, endorsed her candidacy following the withdrawal of the only other remaining contender, South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee.
