A Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has thrown his weight behind the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, in the bribery allegations leveled against him by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
KanyiDaily had reported how Kyari was indicted by the U.S. authorities in an investigation of alleged multi-million dollar fraud perpetrated by a suspected internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly called Hushpuppi.
Abba Kyari was said to have allegedly collected a bribe from Hushpuppi to jail and torture one of his associates after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on a Qatari businessman.
Fani-Kayode Defends DCP Abba Kyari
Reacting in series of posts shared on his Twitter page, Fani-Kayode insisted that unless he sees a prove he will never believe the lies against Kyari, who he described as “one of the bravest, brightest and best cops in Nigeria.”
Noting that there is a deep conspiracy to destroy the career and the excellent service of Kyari, the former minister backed the embattled DCP to come out clean from the allegations of fraud leveled against him by Hushpuppi.
“A super cop that has risked his life protecting us from kidnappers, murderers and terrorists all these years and that has arrested more criminals than any other is accused of taking bribes from a yahoo boy and scammer all the way from America & we are expected to believe it? Not me!
“Abba is one of the bravest, brightest and best cops in Nigeria and I will not believe these crazy allegations levelled against him or condemn him unless I see any evidence to the contrary.
“He has proved himself over and over again when it comes to catching criminals and I do not believe that he is one himself. If he were he would not have such an excellent record in combating crime.
“As far as I am concerned there are as many crooked, bent & killer cops all over the world as there are good ones & America has its fair share of both. The only people that ought to take pleasure in reading this crap about Abba are the kidnappers and terrorists in our country.
“Allegations are a dime a dozen and an indictment does not amount to a conviction: show me the evidence or keep your mouth shut forever. I urge Abba to continue the good work he has been doing and not allow himself to be distracted by his numerous detractors. This is deep,” Fani-Kayode wrote.
How Hushpuppi Bribed Abba Kyari In $1.1 Million Deal
KanyiDaily had reported how Hushpuppi confessed to bribing Kyari to have one of his rivals, Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, arrested and jailed in Nigeria following a dispute over the $1.1 million fraud that victimized a businessman in Qatar.
According to court documents, Hushpuppi allegedly conspired with five others – including Vincent – to defraud the Qatari businessman by claiming to be consultants and bankers who could facilitate a loan to finance the construction of a school.
Following the deal, Hushpuppi asked Kyari to arrest and jail Vincent after both were locked in a dispute presumably over how to share the proceeds from the fraud.
This was after Vincent contacted the Qatari businessman and informed him that he was being scammed by a fraud syndicate involving him and Hushpuppi.
Abba Kyari was said to have sent pictures of Vincent in jail and subsequently sent his bank account number to Hushpuppi to which a wire transfer was sent to him by the fraudster.
Abba Kyari Denies Collecting Bribe From Hushpuppi
Reacting in a post shared on his Facebook page, Abba Kyari denied allegations of conspiracy with Hushpuppi, saying he only met him two years ago and did not benefit financially from the fraudster
He however admitted that N300,000 was sent by the suspected fraudster to a third party, but he clarified that the money was only to assist Hushpuppi to get native clothes and caps.
The police chief also admitted to arresting Chibuzo Vincent, but claimed he was released on bail after investigations revealed that “they are long time friends who have money issues between them”.
IGP Reviews FBI’s Allegation Against Abba Kyari
meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baa has ordered an internal review of the allegations preferred against DCP Abba Kyari by the FBI.
Noting that no stone will be left unturned in unearthing the truth in the bribery allegations, the IGP promised to continue working with the FBI and other international crime fight agencies to curb criminal activities.
