A suspected fake lawyer identified as Stanley Ejirogene has been arrested and remanded in prison custody by a High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was gathered that Ejiroghene has been parading himself as a legal practitioner for over 10 years in the state until he was exposed in court on Wednesday during a cross-examination.
The suspect, who has been practicing for over 10 years, was said to have failed to provide answers to questions on his genuineness as a lawyer in relation to his date of call to bar and the university he attended as a law student.
Justice C. Nwogu remanded Ejirogene on the request of the Rivers State Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Prince Nyekwere, pending the outcome of their investigation.
While addressing pressmen after the incident, Nyekwere said they were informed by the Supreme Court that they do not have the suspect’s name, as a lawyer. His name was also not on the database of the Nigeria Bar Association.
The defense team in the criminal matter also tendered reports from the Supreme Court of Nigeria and the NBA disowning Ejiroghene as a legal practitioner in Nigeria.
Speaking outside the courtroom, the defence lawyer in the said criminal matter Ibikri Otorubio said, “Our suspicion began when the matter first came up for plea and he professed himself to be a learned senior lawyer.
“He now turned to me and said counsel what is the punishment for a dud cheque? I was taken aback, you mean as a very senior counsel as he professed himself to be, he does not know the punishment for dud check?”
