Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, was reportedly among the inmates who escaped from the Kuje Correctional Facility in Abuja.
Osinachi Husband Escapes From Kuje prison In Abuja
KanyiDaily recalls that on June 3, a High Court in Abuja had remanded Nwachukwu at the Kuje prison, pending the hearing and determination of the homicide-related suit instituted against him by the Attorney General of the Federation.
Justice N.K. Nwosu-Iheme gave the order after he pleaded not guilty to 23 counts bordering on domestic violence and homicide, among others.
On July 6, gunmen suspected to be terrorists had attacked Kuje prison and freed over 800 inmates including 69 detained Boko Haram insurgents.
A source from Dunamis International Gospel Center, Osinachi’s former Church, told DAILY POST on Tuesday that Peter could not be found in the prison since the attack happened.
The source said a manhunt has been launched by security operatives in search of the suspect who was accused of subjecting his wife to domestic violence, leading to her death.
“The day we heard of the prison break, we called the prison authorities to know the state of Mr. Nwachukwu but they were initially not forthcoming with the true situation.
“But it was confirmed on Sunday that the man truly escaped from prison custody.
“Manhunt has been launched on him at the moment. Security agencies have been briefed. They are also monitoring his bank account to see if there would be any transaction,” the source said.
Multiple security sources also confirmed to SaharaReporters on Tuesday that the husband to the late gospel singer was among the escaped inmates.
“During our roll call yesterday, we discovered that the husband of the late gospel singer was missing,” a senior prison official said.
KanyiDaily had reported that Osinachi, who is known for her collaborative hit track “Ekwueme”, died at an Abuja hospital on Friday evening, April 8, 2022.
The 42-year-old singer was initially thought to have died of throat cancer but her associates claim it may be connected to an alleged assault by her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, who is now being investigated by the police.
Osinachi’s elder sister, Favour Made, had disclosed that the singer died five days after she was placed on life support following an assault by her abusive husband who kicked her in her chest during a recent attack.
Peter Nwachukwu was arrested by the police on Sunday, April 10, after Osinachi’s younger brother reported a case of culpable homicide against him in Abuja.
Last week, the Federal Government charged Peter Nwachukwu with culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the Penal Code which is punishable with death.
