Paul Pelosi, the husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been “violently assaulted” after a break-in at their home in San Francisco.

Mr Pelosi, the multimillionaire founder of a venture capital firm, was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant with a hammer who broke into their home on Friday morning.
“The 82-year-old suffered blunt force trauma to his head and body,” according to two people with knowledge of the investigation into the attack who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe.
It was gathered that the attacker, who has not been named, is in custody but a motive for the attack is not known, including how the intruder got into the home.
Pelosi’s spokesperson, Drew Hammill said the speaker was not at the residence at the time, and her husband is in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.
“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi.
“The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation.
“Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.”
“The speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.”
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” Hammill said in a statement.
The break-in at her residence raises questions about the security of the home of one of the most powerful lawmakers in the United States..
Mrs Pelosi was re-elected to a fourth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2021, making her second in line to the presidency after Vice-President Kamala Harris.
