The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has been granted bail.
Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who is being tried on five counts was granted bail on Monday by a Federal High Court in Kano State.
The charges against Alhassan Ado Doguwa, include criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, illegal firearm possession, mischief, and inciting a riot.
The presiding judge, Justice Yunusa Muhammad, granted Doguwa bail.
The bail granted to the reps member followed an exparte application for the enforcement of the rights of Doguwa made before the court by his attorney, Nuraini Jimoh.
Jimoh prayed the court to admit the defendant on bail, arguing that his client is presumed to be innocent, under the provision of section 35 sub 6 of the constitution of Federal of Nigeria (1999 as amended)
Ruling on the application, Justice Muhammad granted the application with N500 and two reliable sureties in like sum.
The court said the sureties shall be First Class Emir and any Senior officer in Civil Service.
Justice Muhammad similarly ordered Doguwa to drop his International Passport to Court Registry pending the trial.
Doguwa was earlier arraigned before a Senior Magistrate court by the Kano State Commissioner of Police and was later remanded in prison till March 7, 2023.
In other news, Kanyi Daily reported that a total of 61 persons have died from an outbreak of diphtheria infection in Kano State as of March 2, 2023.
This was disclosed by the Kano State Case Manager, Dr. Salma Suwaid on Monday at a webinar organised by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention with the theme ‘Diptheria outbreak in Nigeria: Vaccination Response.’
