About 52 members of the Biafra Zionist Front (BZF), led by Benjamin Onwuka, have been arrested and remanded in the Enugu Correctional facility.
It was gathered that the agitators were arrested on Tuesday, May 30, while on their way to hoist the Biafra flag inside the Enugu Government House.
The Pro-Biafra agitators had concluded a procession near Okpara Square and were marching towards the Government House when they were apprehended.
On Wednesday, the 52 of them were arraigned at the Enugu Magistrate Court and subsequently remanded in prison along with their leader, Benjamin Onwuka.
A source told The Nations that the arrested agitators, mostly elderly men, were unarmed and displayed Biafran flags, as well as those of the United States and Israel.
“The men numbering over 50 had arrived the venue where they were set to embark on the procession. They had Biafran flags and those of the USA and Israel. They were also carrying loads of tracks bearing the name of their group and their messages.
“So, it was when they started marching towards the Government House that about five Hilux vans loaded with policemen came and arrested them.
“I must tell you that they were not bearing any arms or dangerous weapons. Most of those arrested were elderly men,” the source said.
This is not the first time the Biafra Zionist Front (BZF), under the leadership of Ben Onwuka, has attempted to gain access to the Enugu Government House.
They had previously made unsuccessful attempts to iunvade the Enugu Broadcasting Service, resulting in the death of one of their members in a confrontation with the police.
KanyiDaily recalls that Pro-Biafra separatist agitator, Simon Ekpa was recently invited by the European Union over his petion demanding a Biafra referendum from Nigeria.
