Head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro says the team deserved to defeat Sierra Leone in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played on Sunday at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia.
The Super Eagles departed Monrovia, the capital of Liberia with a 3-2 win over Sierra Leone.
Speaking after the match, Peseiro said, “Very hard match, my players never gave up, they fought till the final whistle. In the first half, we created up to eight opportunities but only scored two goals.
“We deserved to win but I think it was a difficult and very good match but the team is the best in the group. We did a fantastic job against a good team. I’m happy with my players, congratulations to them.”
Three goals courtesy of Napoli star, Victor Osimhen and Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho secured a place for the super eagles in the 2024 AFCON holding in Cote d’Ivoire.
Nigeria comfortably seats in group A, destroying Sierra Leone’s dreams of making it to The 2024 AFCON.
Nigeria currently tops the group with 12 points from 5 matches, closely followed by Guinea-Bissau who have automatically qualified following the outcome of the game.
Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe will seat out AFCON 2024 as they have 5 and 1 points respectively.
Nigeria joins 12 other countries that have booked their place for the AFCON 2024 so far.
Nigeria is a three-time AFCON winner, who last won the competition in 2013 as the Super Eagles were led to victory by the late coach Stephen Keshi.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for two consecutive editions, but finally qualified in 2019, and came in third. The Super Eagles were knocked out in the round of 16 in the last edition of the competition in 2021 held in Cameroon.
