Nigerian singer, Crayon has revealed how he abandoned his pursuit of a university degree after taking multiple attempts at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Crayon, who is signed under the Mavin record label, spoke in a recent interview with Hip TV, where he narrated how his determination and fortuitous encounters paved the way for his successful music career, allowing him to follow his passion and showcase his talent to the world.
According to him, he wanted to gain admission to the University of Lagos, but he gave up on education after writing the post-UTME exam five times without getting admission into the university.
He revealed that before his fifth try, he had already met a friend in the music industry named Baby Fresh, which served as a profound inspiration for him to make a “significant sacrifice” in favor of his music career.
Crayon said, “On the fifth try, I had already met Baby Fresh, who used to work at Mavin. Juggling school and music simultaneously is quite stressful in Nigeria. Music alone is demanding.
“So I sat down with my parents and told them, ‘Mom and Dad, I want to pursue music.’ I explained that it felt like my heart was leading me in that direction. My dad suggested that I give the fifth try a chance, and if it didn’t work out, I could pursue music.”
The singer added that during the fifth Post-UTME exam at the University of Lagos, he made the decision to leave the hall halfway through because he didn’t want to prioritize passing the exam over his passion for music.
He noted that it was during their period that he met the music executive, Don Jazzy, who recognized his talent and subsequently signed him to the prestigious Mavin record label.
