Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to accelerate its investigation into the cases involving the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, and the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration suspended both individuals in mid-June amid allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
During an interview on Channels Television, Falana emphasized the need for the DSS to promptly arraign the duo in court if there is evidence of their involvement. He argued that the prolonged detention of Emefiele and Bawa did not align with the principles outlined in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged the Nigerian government to handle these cases in accordance with the provisions of the law to prevent any exploitation of loopholes.
He stated, “Investigations should be conducted swiftly, especially when serious allegations are made. I do not expect any delays in the investigation of these grave allegations that have been raised.”
Referring to Emefiele’s case, Falana urged the State Security Services to take action regarding the terrorism financing allegations made against the suspended CBN governor last year. He also advised expediting investigations into money laundering and other offenses and referring them to the appropriate government agencies.
Regarding Bawa, Falana acknowledged the lack of clarity regarding the specific charges against him. However, he urged the government and relevant agencies to expedite their investigation and proceed with arraignment if there is evidence of wrongdoing.
